The final report from the ARC Review has been released. I’m pleased to see that the recommendations of the report reflect many of the major issues we highlighted in our submission to the ARC last year. The AIP hopes these recommendations will be adopted and quickly implemented.

This month we join celebrations marking 70 years since Australia’s first nuclear research facility opened at Lucas Heights. It’s a great example of how support for physics has brought benefits to Australians, through health diagnostics and therapeutics, manufacturing tech, environmental monitoring and more. 

If your research has made an important contribution to physics in Australia, please consider nominating for the AIP’s Walter Boas Medal. It’s one of our top awards, presented annually. This year it will be presented at our Summer Meeting, which will be 4–8 December. Nominations are due by 8 May.

Celebrating 70 years of Australian nuclear science 

Seventy years ago, Australia’s first nuclear science research facility opened at Lucas Heights. Since 1953, it has helped diagnose and treat diseases, helped scientists confront environmental challenges, and advanced industry and manufacturing. And a few months ago, helped find a missing radioactive capsule in Western Australia.

Closing soon: AIP prize for excellence in physics research

Nominate by 8 May for the Walter Boas medal. AIP awards the medal annually for original research that makes an important contribution to physics in Australia. The eligibility requirements have been updated to allow non-Australian citizens to apply. The award requires the work to have been completed in Australia. Nominate via the AIP website.
